Brian Hayward is my hero

Noted asshole Sean Avery tried to play tough guy with the former NHL goalie turned broadcaster, but the guy who backed up Patrick Roy for so many years stood his ground.

"You're an embarrassment," the Times quoted Avery as saying and Hayward responded by saying, "You want to see an embarrassment? Look in the mirror, Sean."

Avery walked towards Hayward at one point but was pulled away by assistant coach Ray Bennett.

"You're the reason the league doesn't have a national television deal. You're a (terrible) announcer and you were a (terrible) player," Avery said during the exchange.

Hayward responded: "How would you know? When I played, you were in your third year of eighth grade."

Maybe next Avery will pick a fight with the opposing team's stickboy. I suppose that's easier than fighting back when Georges Laraque wants to drop 'em with you.

Ha, that's quite possibly the best line I've ever heard a hockey broadcaster say.

I live in LA and when I cannot watch the Kings play, I suffer through an Anaheim Ducks broadcast. Having Hayward call the plays is like simply watching a game beside a Ducks fan. No opponent of the Ducks can ever do anything right in his eyes, while every play by any Duck is a "phenomenal" one.

If Avery played for the Ducks, Hayward would be praising his intensity and tenacity. That's just the kind of player Avery is, you love him if he's on your side but hate to play against him.

Watching the Kings throw away a fine start to the season and dwindle into a lackadaisical troup of bush-leaguers, I watch and wish that even half the team could play with the passion Avery does.

Is he the most talented, fastest player on the ice? Not by a long shot. But he'd be on my roster if I was a GM in the NHL.

Passion is one thing but Avery routinely crosses the line and negates all the good things he does with the negative things he brings to a team.

I've never heard Brian Hayward call a game, but even if he is the worst color man in the industry, he doesn't need to be threatened by players.

You called the Kings team bush league, but Avery, for all his emotion and passion, is the very definition most of the time.

What I like the most about SA is the fact that he'll have a very short NHL career. There are too many talented players waiting to play that have actually have talent and a brain...

McMurty-
You should pick your heroes with more discretion. Hayward is a tool. His color commentary is exactly like the earlier comment suggested, like sitting next to a whiny Ducks fan, a seven year old whiny Duck fan at that. He is notoriously biased and selective, he is a insult to any astute hockey observer. That's your hero.

His bias towards the opposition, and in this case SA, is what started the bad feelings between the two. BH, while adding commentary to Ducks/Kings games takes every opportunity to badmouth, insult, and make generally negative personal comments about SA, not all of which are deserved. Insisting that this Ducks player or that Duck player should "take him out." BH makes it very obvious that he just doesn't like SA.

Over and over the same personal comments all eight Kings/Ducks meetings. SA has to take it personally. He has to, because anyone would, and BH knows it.

Sure SA can be an asshole, but you know what? So can your hero.

I am a hockey fan here in the Los Angeles area for the past 21 years. I am a Kings fan and have been to many Ducks games. I cannot even watch a Ducks hockey game generally because of Brian Haywards' "Home Towner" type of announcing. He is so blatantly bias for the Ducks. Any serious hockey fan would not be able to stand listening to this loser badmouth any team that plays against the Ducks. His job is to announce the games fairly, not insult other teams,or favor his team to the point that he alienates all hockey fans. Just a note, Brian,"how could you call SA a 2nd rate player,,Look in the mirror.

I'm the first pro-SA poster. Glad to see I'm not the only guy who thinks BH is absurdly unobjective.

Miikka!! Miikka!! You know this guy's good if even BH is willing to say so.

hayward once said during a game that he wished to see avery get beaten by one of the aneheim tough guys...... it is wrong for a color guy to say something like that...especially with the amount of young kids that are ducks fans

Perhaps there is some justice in the world, since the Ducks games are not being carried by Fox Sports Network through the playoffs, and we therefore don't have to hear Hayward yuk it up over the Colorado and Calgary series.

I'll wager that Sean Avery plays longer than Brian Hayward announces. I have to turn the volume all the way down on my TV just to be able to withstand watching a Ducks game.

People are so moronic.
Hayward 'being a terrible announcer' has absolutely nothing to do with that the hell happened. Fact is, Avery approached Hayward in a disrespectful fashion, and he got his ass shot down for it. Avery has caused way too much trouble with his mouth and his actions. I can't believe LA wants him back again. And how can Kings fans stick up for him? Unbelievable. It's a wonder this man, Avery has not yet been killed.
And as for Hayward being a bad annoucner, like Miller and Fox are any better. Jesus Christ, they constantely get things wrong, and have to keep correcting themselves. Miller isn't so bad, hell, he even announced the game in the Mighty Ducks Movie. HAH! But that other guy, oh Christ...
Hayward has been honored for his work, so that tells you something, doesn't it? And for those of you that said "If Avery was on the team Hayward would be praising him."
Wrong again. He wouldn't be praising him. I would bet all my money on that.
Hazy is a homer. Well, no @#$% sherlock. All announcers are. And Hayward does point out many things that the Ducks do wrongly. Most of you guys wouldn't know that, unless you are a Kings/Ducks fan, which is almost like a horrible mutant person.

Avery is a little wimp that needs to get a good beating from anyone, I don't really care who. It's a wonder he's not kicked out of the NHL yet for his mouth.

And I can bet you Hayward will be announcing much longer than Avery will be playing.

If you want to hear a homer call, listen to a San Jose game.

I have listened to Hayward since he has started and he is a great announcer!! He gives credit where it is due ( no matter what side they are on.) As, for Avery, he is just an asshole! he gives hockey a bad name. He is so much of a dirty player, it sickens me. But, the Kings don't have him anymore, but the Kings still suck! Long live the Ducks!

If I hear Hayward and the Ducks crew misspronounce "careen" as "Karen" one more time, I'm going to scream. Why does they use the word every 30 seconds when he can't learn to pronounce it? It's one thing to be a fan, and that's fine, but Hayward should provide objective analysis or just shut up.

At 4:45 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

He doesn't say "Karen" he says "carom" which is defined as "any strike and rebound, as a ball striking a wall and glancing off."

As in... "the puck caromed off the boards"

J, get your sh!t straight. John Ahlers and Bryan Hayward only announce 4 Ducks-Kings games per year. The other 4 are only announced by Bob Miller and Jim Fox. And this year, Ahlers and Hayward will only announce 3 Ducks-Kings games because the 2nd meeting (a Ducks "home game" played in London) was shown on Versus. Don't make yourself look like an idiot trying to get your point across.

Hayword should no longer be able to announce. He is a joke and a world class looser who couldent announce his way out his goalie equipment. Who wants to hear a retired goalie who couldent play the game of hockey let alone be able to comentate on it. Anyone who has ever watched a duck game with this joker announcing, will forever be dummer for having listen to it. I award him no points, and may god have mercy on his soul.

Hayward is a f'n joke. It's sad because LA could use someone to announce with respect for the game and not a f'n homer. What's really sad is Duck fans don't know the difference.

Brian is an incredible color analyst! ! Yes I'm a Ducks fan...but he tells it like it is. Sorry you other fans have to hear the truth. ... He's right on!!!

Brian is awesome! ! He obviously knows his hockey..he's worked as a color analyst for 20+ years. Quit complaining and watch the games, turn down the volume and do the commentary yourself if you don't want to listen. ..or buy a ticket and go to the game.. I enjoy Brian...relax people. ..
