Redden out for tonight's game

Wade Redden will miss game two of the series tonight. His mother Pat lost her battle to brain cancer and he's flown back to Saskatchewan to be with the family. Christoph Schubert will take his place and has big shoes to fill.

Redden had a terrific game one and was the team's best blueliner, so his loss will hurt, but captain Alfie put it best:

"There are things that are more important than hockey. He's going through a tough time and our thoughts are with him."

I'm going to say something here that is going to get me barbequed, I know, but I believe I am saying what many fans are thinking to themselves:

After a short visit home, it is time for Wade to get on a plane and get back to his team ASAP. He already spent close to two weeks with his mom a few weeks back, when it was clear she was in her last days. Missing seven games down the stretch is a lot, but this was an incredibly trying time in the young man's life, and it wasn't playoff time.

Now he has spent that time with her, she is gone, and it is playoff time. The way to honour her memory is to get back with your boys, and try to go get your name on the Cup. Lengthy visits with all the cousins, aunts and uncles are going to have to wait until late June, as tough as that is right now.

Every family is different, but I only know what my own mother would have told me if she was terminally ill and I was at her bedside. After a day or so, she would have thanked me for coming, then told me politely but firmly to get my ass back home to my job and my family where I was needed.

Sorry I can't offer up a, "he should take all the time he needs" bromide, but Wade has more than fulfilled his duties at home. Now, he owes it to his teammates, his employer, and the fans to get back at it ASAP. Flame away, because I probably deserve it for being a bit heartless, not having my priorities straight, etc. But come on, some of you were at least thinking this, weren't you?

"Please, go back to work, son! Those Big Macs won't make themselves!"

Based on what Bryan Murray said, Redden doesn't plan to be away long.
